Paving & driveways, from the base up

Block paving, porcelain, natural stone and concrete slabs each give you a hard-wearing, characterful surface for a driveway, patio or path, but every one of them is only ever as good as the base it is laid on.

Get the groundwork right and paving stays flat and true for decades. Get it wrong and it sinks, rocks and lets the weeds in, whatever you laid on top.

Block paving

Individually laid concrete or clay blocks, locked together with kiln-dried sand. Hard-wearing, repairable and available in dozens of colours and patterns.

Slabs, stone & porcelain

Large-format porcelain, natural stone and concrete slabs for patios and paths, crisp, low-maintenance and hand-laid on a full mortar bed.

Whichever you choose, we handle the whole job as one accountable team: the dig-out, the engineered sub-base and drainage, the edge restraints and the laying. There is no one to chase and no corner cut between trades.

Thirty years of driveways and hard landscaping across Essex, Kent and London, led personally by Paul Taylor. We will give you an honest steer on the right material and pattern for your property, and a fixed written price before any work starts.

Why homeowners choose our paving

The practical reasons a properly laid drive or patio outlasts a cheap one, and it nearly always comes down to the base beneath it.

  1. Exceptionally hard-wearing

Interlocking blocks and properly bedded slabs spread the load across the whole surface, so a well-laid drive or patio shrugs off daily use for decades.

  2. Repairable, invisibly

Lift a few blocks to reach a service or swap a stained one, then relay them, with no patch and no visible seam, unlike a poured surface.

  3. Patterns, colours & materials

Herringbone or basketweave block, porcelain or natural stone, with borders and detailing chosen to suit the property.

  4. Permeable & SUDS options

Permeable block and jointing let water drain through the surface, keeping a front drive SUDS-compliant and usually planning-free.

  5. Built on an engineered base

Sunken, rocking, weed-filled paving is almost always a base-and-edge failure. We build the sub-base and restraints that keep it flat.

  6. Stays true for 20+ years

Laid over a compacted sub-base with solid edge restraints, block paving and stone comfortably last twenty years and more.

Paving & driveway FAQs

Is block paving better than resin?
Neither is simply better, they suit different tastes. Block paving gives you patterns, borders and the ability to lift and relay individual blocks; resin-bound gives a smooth, seamless, joint-free finish. Both last decades over a properly engineered base, which is the part that actually matters. We install both and will give you an honest steer for your property.
Do you lay porcelain and natural stone patios?
Yes. Alongside block paving we lay porcelain, natural stone (sandstone, limestone, granite) and concrete slabs for patios, paths and steps, all on a proper bed with the falls and drainage set out so water runs away from the house, not toward it.
Why does paving sink, rock or grow weeds?
Almost always a base or edge failure, not the blocks or slabs themselves. A thin or badly compacted sub-base and weak edge restraints let paving spread and settle, and washed-out joints let weeds in. Build the foundation right and those problems largely disappear.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
If the surface is permeable, or drains to a border or soakaway rather than the road, a front driveway usually does not need planning permission. We lay permeable block and set the drainage to those rules as standard, and confirm the specifics on your survey.
Can you repair or relay an existing driveway or patio?
Often, yes. Because paving is laid in individual units, we can lift the affected area, rebuild the base or edge and relay the original blocks or slabs. Where the base has failed across the whole area, a rebuild is the honest answer, and we tell you which on the survey.
