Hardscaping is the structure under everything

Hard landscaping is the engineered, load-bearing part of a garden or driveway: the excavation, sub-bases, drainage, edges, walls and steps that everything else is built on and around.

It is also the part you stop noticing when it is done well, and the part that fails first when it is not. Get it right and paving stays level, walls stay upright and water goes where it should for decades.

Structural groundwork

Excavation, compacted sub-bases, footings and SUDS drainage: the hidden engineering that carries the load and manages the water.

Walls, steps & edges

Retaining walls, garden steps, kerbs and haunched edge restraints that hold levels, link them safely and lock surfaces in place.

We handle the whole structural side as one accountable team: the dig-out, the engineered base and drainage, the footings, walls, edges and steps. There is no one to chase and no corner cut between trades.

Why our hard landscaping lasts

The difference between hard landscaping that holds for decades and work that moves within a few winters, and it nearly always comes down to the base and the drainage.

  1. Engineered from the base up

Sunken, cracked, leaning hard landscaping is almost always a foundation failure. We build the sub-base, footings and restraints that keep everything true.

  2. Drainage done properly

Water is what wrecks walls, paving and bases over time. We design falls, land drains and SUDS drainage in from the start, not as an afterthought.

  3. One accountable team

Dig-out, drainage, footings, walls, edges and finishes handled by our own crew, so there is no one to chase and no corner cut between trades.

  4. Structures that hold

Retaining walls and steps built on proper footings with drainage behind, specified for the load rather than just laid up to look right.

  5. Materials to match

Brick, block, natural stone, timber sleepers and concrete, chosen to suit the property and tie in with the paving and planting around them.

  6. 30+ years of groundwork

Three decades of hard landscaping and groundworks across Essex, Kent and London, led personally by Paul Taylor.

Hardscaping FAQs

What counts as hardscaping?
Hardscaping (or hard landscaping) is the built, structural side of a garden or driveway: the excavation and sub-bases, drainage, kerbs and edgings, retaining walls, steps and mortar work. It is everything the soft landscaping (lawns, planting) and the finished surfaces are built on and around. Get it right and everything above it lasts.
Why does the base matter so much?
Because nearly every hard-landscaping failure, from sunken paving and cracked drives to leaning walls and standing water, traces back to the ground beneath, not the finish on top. A thin or badly compacted sub-base, weak edge restraints or missing drainage will let anything above it move. We engineer the base and drainage first, which is the part that actually determines how long a job lasts.
Do you do the drainage as well?
Yes. Drainage is part of the groundwork, not a separate trade we hand off. We set the falls, lay land drains and soakaways and build SUDS-compliant drainage into driveways, patios and behind retaining walls, so water is managed by design rather than causing problems later.
Can you build a retaining wall on a slope?
Yes, and it is one of the things we are asked for most. A retaining wall is a structure doing real work, so we build it on a proper concrete footing, specified for its height, with drainage behind it to relieve water pressure. Done that way it turns an awkward bank into usable, level terraces that stay put.
Do you take on the whole project or just the groundwork?
Both. We can handle a full driveway or garden from dig-out to finish as one accountable team, or come in to do a specific piece of structural work: a retaining wall, a set of steps, a drainage fix or repointing. Either way you get an honest assessment on the survey and a fixed written price before we start.
