Commercial surfacing, in more detail
For estate managers, contractors and developers weighing up resin-bound and hard landscaping on commercial sites, here's how we approach specification, compliance and delivery.
Where resin-bound works hardest commercially
Resin-bound surfacing has moved well beyond domestic driveways. Car parks, estate roads and courtyards, school and campus walkways, cycle routes, retirement and care settings, showroom frontages and public-realm schemes all benefit from the same properties: a seamless, trip-free surface, natural drainage, and a finish that lifts the look of a site without the maintenance cycle of loose gravel or the patch-repair look of tarmac.
Because the aggregate blend, laid depth and base build-up are all specified per scheme, the same system scales from a pedestrian courtyard at 15mm to trafficked areas at 18–20mm over an engineered base designed for the loads involved. We'll work from your specification, or help you write one.
Drainage, SUDS and planning conditions
Sustainable drainage is now a standard planning condition on commercial development, and surfacing choices are often where schemes pass or fail. A resin-bound build-up over an open-graded, free-draining base functions as source-control SUDS: rainwater infiltrates through the surface rather than loading the site's drainage network, which can reduce attenuation requirements elsewhere on the scheme.
Because we carry out the groundworks and drainage as well as the surfacing, the whole build-up — formation, sub-base, binder course where required, and wearing surface — is delivered and documented by one contractor. That means one design conversation with your engineer and one point of accountability at handover.
Accessibility, safety and everyday performance
A seamless resin-bound surface has no joints, edges or loose stone, which makes it genuinely accessible: wheelchairs, pushchairs, sack trucks and trolleys run smoothly across it, and there are no trip points to manage. The natural texture of the aggregate provides good slip resistance, and anti-slip additives can be specified for ramps, gradients and shaded areas where extra grip is required.
Day to day, maintenance is a sweep and an occasional wash. There's no annual top-up of gravel, no weed cycle in the joints, and damage from an isolated incident can be repaired locally rather than resurfacing the whole area. Over a 15–25 year life, that keeps the whole-life cost competitive with surfaces that are cheaper on day one.
Working on live sites, to programme
Commercial work is as much about delivery as materials. We're used to phased working around occupied buildings, schools and trading businesses: agreed working windows, pedestrian and traffic management, protection of adjacent finishes, and tidy, signed-off handovers at each phase. Resin-bound surfacing also cures fast — foot traffic is typically possible within 24 hours and vehicles within 48 — which keeps closures short.
You'll deal with the same team from survey to sign-off, led personally by Paul Taylor with over 30 years on demanding sites across Essex, Kent and London. Send us your drawings or arrange a site visit, and we'll come back with a documented, fixed quotation against your programme.
